Instead of a straight cut from once scene to the next
, you can add Video Transitions between two clips.  Watch the video for some cool examples.

Notes &Tips

  • By controlling how much the two clips overlap, you can control how fast or how slow the transition is.

  • To increase the overlap, just slide the second clip more into the first clip.  To decrease the overlap, just slide the second clip out more from the first clip.

  • Transitions add a nice touch.  But don't overdo it.  It's only striking if you use it sparingly.

  • The transition I use the most is the simple Dissolve

  • To dissolve one clip to the next, I can either drag down the Dissolve transition from the Video Transitions Collection to my timeline, or I can simply slide the second clip into the first clip.  If I sound Greek to you, please preview the video on Overlapping clips.

Homework

  1. Open your Movie Maker project if it's not open yet.

  2. Click 'View Video Transitions' on the Tasks List so you see the video transitions on the Collection pane.

  3. Double-click on a few video transitions to preview them.

  4. Add a transition between two clips on your timeline.  Notice how the two clips now overlap in a semi-transparent area. Preview the effect.

  5. Slide the overlapping clips closer together.  Preview the transition again.

  6. It's so easy to fall in love with Transitions but remember: it's only striking when used sparingly.
