Start Video Editing Today. What Are You Waiting For?

When my son was born, another parent advised me, "Don't blink". I didn't listen. I blinked, and in that one blink of an eye, my son is 9 years old today. Time flies, and what I don't capture is lost forever. But parents have a good reason for procrastinating capturing their childrens’ lives into beautifully-choreographed videos. We are too busy living in the moment. Isn’t that more important?Start Video Editing Today. Why Wait?I’m here to tell you you can have both. And each actually enhances and enriches the other. But first, you got to examine your mindset about starting this wonderful journey to building your family’s home video collection.

1. Do you "Have To" or Do You "Want To" ?

First, when you tell yourself that you have to do something, you're implying that you're being forced to do it, so you'll automatically feel a sense of resentment and rebellion. Procrastination kicks in as a defense mechanism to keep you away from this pain.

The solution to this first mental block is to realize and accept that you don't have to do anything you don't want to do. Ask yourself, ‘do you have to make home movies’ or ‘do you want to make home movies? Procrastination becomes less likely on tasks that you openly and freely choose to undertake.

2. Don’t "Finish It". "Begin It" Instead

Second, thinking of video editing as one big whole complex project that you have to complete will virtually ensure that you put it off. When you focus on the idea of finishing a task where you can't even clearly envision all the steps that will lead to completion, you create a feeling of overwhelm. If you say to yourself, "I've got to produce a DVD this year" or "I must digitize our video tapes before they deteriorate” you're very likely to feel overwhelmed and put the task off. Instead, ask yourself, “What small step can I start on right now?” Our How-To Central breaks up the video editing process into small tasks. Each How-To video is only 2-3 minutes long. Do you think you can watch one How-To video tutorial today?

3. Replace Perfectionism With Permission To Be Human

A third reason families don’t get started on making home movies is thinking it’s got to be good enough for Hollywood. Give yourself permission to be human. I can guarantee you, your first home movie will look home-made. So what? Ten years from now, are you going to be glad you have a home-made video of your toddler or are you going to regret that your raw video footage tape has become grainy and shaky?

4. Schedule Time for Guaranteed Fun

Here’s a big tip if you want to edit home videos. You won’t find time. You got to make it. You got to carve out time, even small chunks. The key is consistency. For example: Every Thursday evening after the kids go to bed, I will spend one hour having fun preserving my family’s memories. Then, after each session, write down what you learned and accomplished in that session. And make sure you come back again next Thursday.

Poke around this web site. Look at the Video Showcase. You’re going to have so much fun. But you gotta start.
